Grizzly Bears are abundant in the Talkeetna Mountains of interior Alaska. Glassing valleys rich with blueberries and migratory routes is a sure fire way to encounter these nomadic bears.
We hunt game unit 13, that is open to grizzly bear hunting year-round. However the best times for hunting are May, June, August and September when the bear’s hides are still at their prime.
We do offer a late July hunt for those wishing to hunt bears on or near and active salmon stream. Our late July, early August hunt for 2005 lasted six hours, resulting in a 7’9” boar being taken by lunchtime. 13 grizzlies were sighted during the six hour hunt.
We can also offer a variety of hunting methods, from float hunting remote salmon streams, to backpacking spike camps over miles of tundra for a change of scenery or setting up a comfortable base camp and hunting from proven vantage points for the day!
“Jake Jefferson took me on the grizzly bear hunt of a lifetime! If you will get in decent shape, he has the area, ability and desire to produce a great hunt and acquire a wonderful trophy. He is no nonsense and nonstop in trying to get your animal and a great individual as well!” Joe Mckee
Colors vary greatly from blonde to dark chocolate to silver and range in size from 7’ to 9’+. Rifles in the .30 caliber range are best and the .338’s are also very well suited for Grizzly bear hunting. Be prepared for hunting condition shots at less than 200 yards. We have hunts available during May, June, July, August and September. Black bear can be incidentally taken free of charge on any grizzly hunt and wolves are free of charge for hunts that take place after August 10.
“Jake and I planned a grizzly bear hunt on short notice. His knowledge of his grizzly hunting areas is very good and we were covered up in bears on Day 1 and I took my bear the same day. I would highly recommend Jake to anyone considering a bear hunt.” Joe Gilbert
Each day will involve walking 3-6 miles and glassing from vantage points that offer the best chance at locating bears. Hunters should be in decent physical condition and be prepared to carry a small daypack of approximately 25lbs. If the hunt is booked as a backpacking adventure hunters should be prepared to carry all of their hunting gear and a small tent (provided). An average weight of 50Lbs.

I have followed Jake Jefferson on various forums for a few years, I liked the hunt reports I read from many other hunters and wanted to do a hunt with him. With being in my late 60’s figured it would be to challenging.
I decided to do a grizzly bear hunt with him which he was tailoring to my needs, but it ended up the unit allowed baiting and he had a great area to do that hunt in.
Not as easy as black bear baiting a lot more challenging. We seen many bears and that alone was a great experience . As the pictures show we where successful.
I recommend Jake’s outfit to any and all hunters. I have booked another hunt with him on Kodiak Island for deer.
Good luck to all.
I have been using Havalon knives almost exclusively for the past decade, there is no better tool for undressing an Alaskan brown bear or boning out a trophy Sitka black tail deer. From initial cut to the finishing fleshing of your trophy, the Havalon series of knives will be there.
